Call for fiber artists, fashion designers

Call for entries for TACtile’s next show: “Steampunk: Mechanical Science meets Victorian Romance”The TACtile Textile Arts Center is changing gears — literally! Artists are invited to submit entries by April 18 for our next exhibit: Steampunk: Mechanical Science meets Victorian Romance to be held May 5 to Aug. 6.This is where past and future mechanical science meets Victorian romance and will feature fiber art interpretations of the Steampunk movement.

An ever-growing movement of intrigue and fantasy; Steampunk couture is a romantic mix of Victorian lace, silks and brocades, goggles, brass and copper, watch parts, found objects and filigree transformed into a mesmerizing artistic narrative with a mechanical influence.

Working with a myriad of fabrics, lace, roving, yarn, buttons, beads, knit, crochet, needlework, paint, dye, gears, cogs, rivets and studs, the artist creates works engulfed in passion from a fictional world where mechanical science is united with Victorian romance.

Artists have described Steampunk style as:

“Mad Max meets Jane Austen.Sid Vicious shakes hands with Charlotte Bronte. Vivienne Westwood dances with Charles Dickens. These images are how I describe Steampunk. It’s fashion style influenced by science fiction based in Victorian England.” — Jean Campbell

“Steampunk evokes a sense of adventure and discovery, and embraces extinct technologies as a way of talking about the future” according to The Steampunk Bible: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Imaginary Airships, Corsets, and Goggles, Mad Scientists, and Strange Literature, by Jeff VanderMeer

“It deals with time travel and Victorian-era technology that’s powered by steam.” ELENA SANDERS, Steampunk Designer

The Steampunk show will be a juried show. Our jurors will be asked to select the best examples of Steampunk across the variety of fiber art disciplines, with a focus on couture.Artists may submit up to three items. The items may be for sale or not, as the artist chooses.

The show will be at TACtile’s new location, in the JHB building, 1955 S. Quince St., Denver. The show will open May 5 and will run through Aug. 6.

TACtile is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and until 8 p.m. on Thursday. Third Thursday of the month TACtile closes at 5 p.m. for Guild events. Various events and classes will be presented during the show.

TACtile is hosting first show in new location

Art center’s winter gallery exhibit a showcase of textiles, environmentally friendly design

TACtile Textile Arts Center is hosting our first gallery show in our new home through Jan. 29. It features a dazzling array of one-of-a-kind wearable art, jewelry, bags, scarves, wall hangings including anything textural and everything made with fiber, yarn, beads and buttons.

Because the lobby has so many intriguing items, it creates visions of what is in store at the end of the trip up the elevator. As you enter TACtile, you see much more than visions of sugar plums, you realize that fiber art is alive and well. Restocking is a work in progress since there was a steady stream of customers at TACtile’s winter member showcase opening.

Jackets, scarves, necklaces, toys, whimsical characters, wall art, and everything so bright and beautiful. The winter showcase features a dazzling array of one-of-a-kind wearable art, jewelry, bags, scarves, wall hangings, including anything textural and everything made with fiber, yarn, beads and buttons. Hand-woven, hand-knitted or hand-stitched, many items are recycled, reinvented, or environmentally sustainable designs.

Of course, the winter showcase member sale is the premiering exhibit at TACtile’s new location in the JHB button warehouse building, 1955 S. Quince St., in Denver, near Quebec Street and East Evans Avenue. Be sure to visit tactilearts.org for more information. And plan now to pick your plum of a unique, handmade gift. Admission is free to view these unique fiber art designs.

TACtile in the news!

Hello, textile fans!  Things are really happening at TACtile this fall — our annual Bizarre Textile Bazaar was wildly successful, and we’ve got lots of new classes in the works.  We’re also getting our blog re-started! We’ll try to keep you up-to-date on what’s going on at TACtile and in the larger textile community, so check back often.

TACtile has been getting some great press, too.  In case you missed it, the Denver Post ran an article recently about TACtile and our fabulous executive director, Dianne Denholm.  Check it out here.  The article also highlights our current exhibit, “Green With Envy: ReCycle, ReInvent and RePurpose,” which runs through November 6.
